Prof. Dr. Aamenah Malik(HOD IOD Biochemistry) organized a pre-conference workshop titled “Ethics and Professionalism in Healthcare and Academia” on Thursday, 9th October 2025 (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM) as part of the 1st National Conference of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry (BIOCON ’25) organized by the Society of Medical and Clinical Biochemistry (SOMCB).
The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Sarosh Saleem (Head, Department of Bioethics, SOMCB) who holds a masters in Bioethics from AKU and a PhD in healthcare ethics (Saint Louis Uni, Minnesota,USA) , fellowship in pediatric ethics ( Children’s Mercy Kansas City, Minnesota, USA) .She is founder and Director of the Diploma in Healthcare Ethics and Professionalism (DHEP) program at SMDC. Our co-facilitator was Dr. Faiza Ahmed (Department of Biochemistry, CMH LMC & IOD) who holds a master in Bioethics with distinction (AKU) and is faculty for ongoing DHEP program being conducted at SMDC in collaboration with LUMS. A total of 30 participants from MBBS, BDS, SAHS, and ION attended this interactive session, which included case-based discussions, scenario analyses, and reflective exercises.
The workshop emphasized ethical decision-making, academic integrity, empathy, and accountability in healthcare. Participants found the session engaging, relevant, and appreciated the facilitators’ practical insights. They also recommended holding similar workshops more frequently and extending the duration for deeper case discussions. Workshop concluded with remarks and souvenier presentation by Chief Executive Lt. Gen Salman Saleem (HI Military) and a group photograph.
