Introduction

The Department of Pathology at CMH Lahore Medical College is headed by Dr. Muhammad Saeed Anwar who leads a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty encompassing all the disciplines of the subject. These include professors, associate professors, and assistant professors in the fields of Histopathology, Hematology, Chemical Pathology, and Microbiology. The department is involved in teaching the subject of Pathology to MBBS students during their third and fourth years and various Allied Health Sciences programs. The faculty aims to build a strong foundation for the students through innovative teaching. All the members of this department have completed their certification in Health Professional Education, thus showing their commitment to excellence in medical teaching. The faculty has published numerous research articles in national & international medical journals and presented their research at scientific conferences. Moreover, the department is involved in conducting scientific workshops in various disciplines of Pathology and managing the College Scientific journal, MedEra. Faculty members are always encouraging students to get involved in research activities and provide facilitation at all levels. Our faculty plays a key role in the college mentorship program, providing students with continuous support in academics and personal development. In addition to excellence in academia, the Pathology department is heading several student societies. Currently, the department is heading the Patient Welfare Society, Qira’at & Naat Society, Photography Club, Career Counselling Board, and Constellasians Alumni Association. Students are welcomed here and encouraged to join the societies of their interest and actively participate in various events. Our aim is not only the excellence of our students in the field of medicine but beyond.

Head of Department

Professor Muhammad Saeed Anwar is a distinguished academic and a seasoned pathologist and microbiologist with an illustrious career spanning over four decades in medical education. He joined CMH Lahore Medical College in 2013 and currently serves as the Head of the Department of Pathology.

A proud alumnus of King Edward Medical College, Lahore, he completed his MBBS in 1981. His passion for laboratory medicine led him to pursue a Diploma in Clinical Pathology (1986), followed by an M.Phil in Microbiology (1988) from the prestigious Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI), Lahore. Committed to excellence in teaching, he also holds a Certificate in Health Profession Education (CHPE) from Garrison University/National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS).

Professor Anwar’s academic journey began as a Demonstrator in Pathology at his alma mater, KEMC, in 1983. His exceptional skills soon propelled him to the role of Assistant Professor of Microbiology at PGMI, Lahore, where he served for over a decade from 1992 to 2004. During this tenure, he was instrumental in teaching and mentoring postgraduate students, supervising numerous research projects for M.Phil degrees. He further honed his expertise in undergraduate medical education during his time at SIMS, where he progressed from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor of Pathology.

His dedication and scholarly contributions were recognized with promotion to the rank of Professor of Pathology at Dera Ghazi Khan Medical College and subsequently to his current leadership role at CMH Lahore Medical College. As HOD, he is deeply involved in teaching Microbiology and Pathology to a diverse cohort of students, including those in the MBBS, BS Nursing, and BS Allied Health Sciences programs.

An active contributor to the academic community, Professor Anwar serves as an examiner and paper setter for both undergraduate and postgraduate examinations for the University of Health Sciences, Lahore, and the National University of Medical Sciences, Rawalpindi. His prolific research output includes over 80 published articles, and he is a regular participant in national workshops and conferences. He also lends his expertise as a peer reviewer for several renowned journals, including the Journal of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (JCPSP), Esculapio, Biomedica, and Life and Science.

Professor Anwar is a respected member of several key professional bodies, including the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and is a life member of both the Pakistan Association of Pathologists (PAP) and the Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Society (MMIDSP). His career is a testament to his unwavering commitment to advancing medical education, research, and diagnostic excellence.
