Introduction
Community&Preventive dentistry is the dynamic field of dentistry which provides basic & advanced health knowledge like prevention of Oral/dental diseases & awareness of Oral hygiene in any population to an individual and group of people. Community & Preventive Dentistry is a basic science subject taught in the Second Professional year of BDS. The main purpose of the subject is to achieve good oral hygiene & to spread health awareness in the public through organized community efforts.
The Research Module is a cornerstone of the Community & Preventive Dentistry curriculum, delivered longitudinally over the first three years of the BDS program. Throughout the module, students work under the close supervision of experienced faculty members who provide comprehensive mentorship at every stage of the research process. By the end of this structured experience, students are expected to produce a manuscript suitable for submission to a PMDC-recognized journal
The department offers a supportive academic and clinical environment designed to prepare undergraduate students in the field of Community and Preventive Dentistry. It focuses on developing students’ clinical competence and confidence through active participation in Community outreach programs. These experiences enable students to appreciate their vital role in promoting oral health at the population level. The department aligns its approach with the WHO Oral Health Division’s “Live, Learn, and Laugh” model, fostering an engaging and enjoyable learning experience.
Head of Department
Welcome to the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry at the Institute of Dentistry, CMH Lahore Medical College. I am honored to lead a discipline that lies at the heart of public health, focusing on the promotion of oral health, prevention of disease, and delivery of care beyond the confines of the clinic into the community.
Our department is dedicated to training future dentists to think beyond individual treatment and address oral health at a population level. We emphasize evidence-based prevention, health education, and early intervention strategies that reduce disease burden and improve quality of life. From school-based programs and outreach camps to epidemiological research and health promotion initiatives, our students gain meaningful, hands-on experience in real-world settings. As oral health challenges continue to evolve, our mission is to prepare graduates who can design, implement, and evaluate effective preventive programs with compassion and scientific rigor.
I invite you to explore our department, connect with our dedicated faculty, and witness how community-oriented dentistry can create lasting impact improving lives, one community at a time.
