Seminar on “WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY” Held at CMH Lahore Medical College on May 27, 2010

CMH Lahore Medical College (CMHLMC) organized seminar to commemorate the World No Tobacco Day. The objective of the seminar was to create awareness among the youth/students and the general public about the health hazards of tobacco smoking and the various techniques of smoking cessation as well as establishing and promoting a healthy environment. The theme of seminar was “Gender and Tobacco”. The seminar started here in lecture hall on Thursday morning. A large number of faculty members, students and people from different walk of life turned up at the seminar to improve understanding of health hazards of tobacco smoking, anti-smoking laws and various cessation techniques.

Lt General (R) Syed Afzal Ahmad, Princpal of CMHLMC was the chief guest at the seminar. Professor Dr N.R. Malik, Head of Community Medicine delivered the welcome address.

Eminent medical professionals delivered speeches to highlight the importance of the day including epidemiology of smoking, health hazards of tobacco smoke, smoking and heart disease, women and smoking, various smoking cessation techniques and WHO role in the control of tobacco epidemic with relation to MPOWER & legislation. Speakers included Brigadier Jawwad A Khan, Professor Dr Muhammad Ashraf Chaudhry, Lt Col Muhammad Wasim, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, Col Shamim, head of gynaecology department and Mr Shahzad Alam Khan, WHO National Professional Officer (tobacco control)

Essay writing competition of students on the topic “Rising trend of smoking among youth – what should be done”, was also held and first two position holder students also spoke on the subject in the seminar. Moreover students of CMHLMC also participated in poster exhibition competition.

In the end of seminar, Chief Guest Lt General (R) Syed Afzal Ahmad gave concluding remarks and also distributed souvenirs among participants. Whereas Brig (R) Muhammad Younis Mubashir, Vice Principal CMHLMC distributed souvenirs and certificates among winner of essay and poster medical students.

This seminar was part of awareness campaign of CMHLMC.
